In his address to students Obama employed certain tactics to appeal to students. He made several references to popular products, such as the iPhone and the Xbox (and like we said in class, he most likely chose these product names to drop because they are American), to try to grab kids’ attention and draw them into what he was saying. He used his personal story about living in Indonesia to try to be relatable, personally, I found this kind of annoying, but it probably helped some kid somewhere relate to him better and understand better what he was trying to say to them. The way Obama delivered the speech made it feel like he was talking to you; his tone was very casual and he kept it somewhat entertaining, which is definitely important when you are talking to kids. Overall, I thought he was logical in the advice he gave. By saying that the responsibility is ours he changed up the normal “you can be whatever you want to be” spiel that everyone is so used to hearing.
Despite so much hoopla surrounding this speech, Obama was able to get his point across to millions of kids. And even if half of those kids weren’t paying attention, there is probably at least one kid somewhere who was inspired by this speech.
