the playlist

1. Weezer - Island in the Sun
I don't know about you all, but I'm pretty tired of all the rain and snow and cold. I'm ready for Summer.

2. The Strokes - Someday
A really good song. Listening to this makes me happy. I'm not really sure what the lyrics are (the guy kind of mumbles alot), but I like the beat and stuff.

3. The Avett Brothers - The General Specific
How can something general also be specific? I don't know either. It's a good song, and I like the guy's voice. It's sort of wailing-ish, and you can tell that he puts alot of emotion into it.

4. Paul Simon - Kodachrome
Quote wall...nuff said.

5. Jack Johnson - Do You Remember
Best Jack Johnson song there is. It's just really chill and fun to listen to. The song tells a good story about lasting love, something that you don't really see in the music industry that much.

6. Modest Mouse - Missed the Boat
Discusses the bummer-moments in life, but does it in a upbeat way so that I'm not feeling all sad and mopey after listening to it.

7. Vampire Weekend - A-Punk
99% of the time, I do not know what this guy is saying. But it has a very upbeat sound and quick tempo and the such...just a good song that really lifts the spirits.

8. Ben Lee - Catch my Disease
Pop-y. Fresh. Entertaining. A great example of happy music.

9. The Morning Benders - Waiting for a War
Piano, drums, guitar, xylophone...what more can a guy want in a song? Good lyrics and a good beat. I'd rock to this one.

10. Savage - Swing
Watch Knocked-Up. You'll see.

11. Eric Hutchinson - Rock and Roll
Pretty self-explanatory. Good storytelling element, really relates to alot of young peoples's lives. Maybe.

12. Lil Wayne - Throw it in the Bag
Timeless classic. Lil Wayne makes great use of a great beat. Not good if you don't like profanity though...

13. R.E.M. - At my most Beautiful
Just a really good song. I like the tamborine-it's nice.

14. Fountains of Wayne - The Girl I Can't Forget
Great lyrics. I don't know how he manages to tell such a good story while still rhyming everything together. It's funny too.

15. The Fratellis - Flathead
Very upbeat and energetic. Did you know that the band is made up of three brothers? That would be a pretty fun occupation.

16. Matt Costa - Mr. Pitiful
I like Matt's music. I also think the piano part was the background to a series of Apple commercials. Pretty cool.

17. Death Cab for Cutie - Diamond and a Tether
This band has a pretty weird name. But like they say, weird is generally a good thing. Good beat, nice instrumentation, interesting lyrics = good song.

18. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Part One
Honestly, I'm only really picking this song because of the the title. I mean, it's a pretty good song...but "Yoshimi Battle the Pink Robots, Part One"? That's epic.

19. The Kooks - She Moves in Her Own Way
I can never stop myself from dancing/dancing to this song. It's just a really happy song with some pretty good lyrics.

20. The Killers - All These Things That I've Done
The band's name is kind of a turn-off, but besides that, I really enjoy their music. This is one of their better songs.

21. Regina Spektor - The Calculation
Great lyrics. Nice beat. Makes me feel good when I listen to it.

22. Geto Boys - Damn it Feels Good To Be a Gangsta
Once again, pretty self-explanatory.

Sorry this is late, but great playlists take time to make.

Movie

Some movies are Great and some just suck, but some are only good until the ending. For example i loathed the ending to the most recent Indiana Jones movie. I mean a space ship coming out of the ground? Really? And who was the genius that even decided to put aliens in Indiana Jones!? For this blog you have to find a movie you don't like the ending of, explain why, and write a brief summary of how you think it should have ended.

Pensive Playlist

So, my playlist is just for thinking, when youre in that state of mind where you want to do nothing else but just sit there and ponder the day's or the week's events. I chose each song for a different reason, but one that applies to all songs is familiarity. I have listened to each over 100 times, and I think thats part of the reason they are good thinking songs: they stimulate the brain but don't preoccupy it with new lyrics or chords to learn.

The Riddle- Five for Fighting
A very touching song that reminds me that there are always more important things in life than whatever I might be concerned about.

Heartbreak Warfare- John Mayer
A very relaxing song. The kind you can listen to while you ponder something important. It induces an almost trance-like state.

Death and All His Friends- Coldplay
A beautiful melody that isn't too distracting with lyrics. Tension builds up and releases (definitely Brian Eno's influence), and by the end of the song, you are completely cool and relaxed. I can play it on the piano, which is an added memory attributed to this song in my mind.

Passenger- Onerepublic
This is currently my favorite song, for its pleasing melodies and chord progression. Coldplay-esque with the guitar parts overlapping the piano. I never get tired of the song and often don't even think about it as I sing along, leaving my mind free to wander.

I Dare You to Move- Switchfoot
The most upbeat song of the playlist blends rock with and excellent vocal performance. The tension built up in the final chorus leaves a perfect ending for the song and the playlist.

swim meet songs

i usually listen to these songs at a swim meet on my i-pod or in my head.

Can't be Touched by Ray Jones. I was listening to this song before our relay won regionals. we couldn't be touched!

We Will Rock You. I listen to this song at the start of the meet. It's a classic song, and i just love it!

The final three songs are Psychosocial, Before I Forget, and Sulfur by Slipknot. I know they don't have much to do with swimming but the rock just pumps me up.

Pissed Off

Being the cliche it is, here's my "Pissed Off" playlist.

1). "Death of Me" - Red - Innocence and Instinct
Pretty self explanatory.

2). "I Will Not Bow" - Breaking Benjamin - Dear Agony
This song basically says "f**k you, get off my back."

3). "Whiskey Hangover" - Godsmack - Single
Perfect song for being pissed off and saying "leave me alone, I do what I please."

4). "Out from Under" - Red - Innocence and Instinct
Basically, why didn't you help me? You've crushed me this whole time and didn't give half a rats ass.

5). "Had Enough" - Breaking Benjamin - Phobia
So you've smashed my life to pieces, but now karma's kickin your ass. Had Enough?

Daydream

Daydreaming is one of my favorite things to do, because for just a few moments, interruptions from the outside world are meaningless. You can imagine yourself anywhere in the world, or creating those nostalgic memories again. It's also a great form of relaxation; you can create any environment, and nothing can bother you. With these songs, you can close your eyes, listen, and let the music take you to a new place.

1. Parachutes - Coldplay
One of my favorite songs, mainly because it's so succinct. The melody is so calm, and you could listen to it for hours. The only downside is that it is only 46 seconds, and you wish that it could on and on.
2. Nocturne In E Flat Major - Chopin
Since I first found this song in an old music book, I've always admired Chopin's ability for music. From his passionate songs to his gentle ones, all of them are genius compositions.
3. Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve
It starts out with catchy strings, and from there you're hooked. I never knew what the lyrics were for this song, so when I looked them up, they're actually meaningful.
4. Who Says - John Mayer
Most of John Mayer's songs are pretty mellow, I just picked this one since he says stoned.
5. Snow [Hey Oh] - Red Hot Chili Peppers
The most upbeat song on this list, but I think it's good song to relax too. This song always cheers me up when something's wrong.

Road Trip Playlist

This playlist is for a road trip to Cape Cod, Massachusetts with my family. For as long as I can remember, my family has gone up to Cape Cod for a hearty chunk of time each summer break, and a lot of good memories come from those times. This list includes both old and new songs.

1. Don't Stop Believing - Journey. Whenever we start a road trip, especially a long one, my sister and I are always really pumped up. This song is just so lively and fun to sing to, I couldn't imagine a better opening to a road trip.
2. Respect - Aretha Franklin. I remember once when we were going to Cape Cod, my sister and I were picking out yet another CD to listen to, and we started arguing about it because we wanted to listen to two different CD's. My sister ended up getting her way, so we put in an Aretha Franklin CD of which "Respect" was the first track. Even though I was annoyed and slightly pouty about not getting to listen to my choice, the song was so upbeat that I couldn't help enjoying myself.
3. Homeward Bound - Simon and Garfunkel. Because my family has gone to Cape Cod every summer of my life, it has become like a second home for me. Our road trips to Cape Cod were also probably the first place I heard Simon and Garfunkel, so this song truely reminds me of Cape Cod.
4. You've Got a Friend - James Taylor. James Taylor is another artist I associate with road trips to Cape Cod. It's also a very soothing song to listen to as a road trip winds down.
5. There is a Reason - Alison Krauss and Union Station. This song is also calming and very easy to listen to. It's a nice way to finish up a long road trip when everyone is tired and worn out.

Playlist for Knitting

Knitting is much more difficult that it may seem. You need to keep the bobbins over the ribs while simultaneously sliding the gauge up the row counter. Not to mention, if the stranding if off center, then the entire row needs to be redone. But it can be done, and when making a knitted material, it is much more helpful if you have something to keep your mind focused on the task at hand. I decided that the best type of music to help one stay committed to the knitting would be Old School Rap. This g-rate genre, unlike its successors, has a lighthearted and cool beat that just makes your fingers want to keep knitting. I have compiled the top five songs that would be the most effective in helping to keep a calm and cool mind during this stressful time. 1. Its Rockin Time by Kool Kyle the Starchild would be very successful in allowing a person to get loose. The steady beat and easy listening lyrics would be a great motivation to persevere. 2. Rappers Convention by Harlem World Crew. This also would get anybody pumped up and ready to go, while not overdoing it. Old School rap does not have the characteristic bass of the newer generations, but it does keep the rhythm flowing and the audience interested, which is what is important. 3. Superrapin' by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. As one of the first rap songs, this would be excellent for knitting because of the inspirational message that it presents. 4. Adventure of Super Rhyme by Jimmy Spicer. This story-based rap song carries the audience along for an exciting ride that goes from referencing Frankenstein to Aladdin. 5. Philosophy Rappin Spree by Super 3. This would be a great compliment to all of the other songs in all of the syncopated beats. This song has a more upbeat tone that is very motivational. Just remember, as this song says "We wont stop till we bring the house down" -Happy knitting

Driving Songs

This Blog took me more time to do, but I think it’s one of the most enjoyable blogs yet. I hate driving in the car alone, its so lonely and depressing. There’s no one to talk to so instead I listen to the radio and sometimes sing along to the songs I know. Since my CD player doesn’t work, I MUST listen to what the radio picks. Rap, Rock, or Oldies, whatever’s on, if I know it, I’ll sing it. So the playlist I have created is called “Driving Alone in the car.”

1. Here Without You - 3 Doors Down
For us lonely people, plus its on the radio ALL the time!

2. The Boys of Summer- Don Henley
“Out on the road today I saw a Dead Head sticker on a Cadillac/ a little voice inside my head said don’t turn back, you can never look back” Classic

3. Baby, Now That I've Found You- The Foundations
A catchy song, it’s sweet and brings you up, buttercup.

4. You Are Not Alone- Michael Jackson
For some reason people hate it when I sing this song, but I love it. Pretty emotional, it makes my stomach turn, in a good way. Makes you feel like you’re not alone.

5.Take Me Home Tonight- Eddie Money
A classic from 1986, easy to memorize and B92 and Magic 105.5 Just love this song, so its widely available.

Playlist...

Ok, this will be the third time I've written something for this blog. I didn't like my first idea, so I wrote a killer second blog about a playlist built around mindless head banging and air guitar. Guess who's laptop also decided to have a random problem with memory space and shut down? You guessed it, mine. So here's my "I'm mad at my laptop, and don't care to get over it!" playlist(Also great for staying in a bad mood):

1. Get Back-Ludacris. Nothing like an angry black man to summarize what I'm thinking. "Make one false move I'll take you down. Get back motherf****er you don't know me like that!" This song shows exactly how I feel towards my laptop with that one line. And it does this more with the emotion behind it and not just the words. This song, at the right time, can push you into being mad for no reason.

2. One Step Closer-Linkin Park. In their younger days, Linkin Park was just another band who sounded like they were angry at their dads. This song is also full of screaming, and at one point they repeatedly scream "Shut up when I'm talking to you!" and just "Shut up!" over and over. It definitely helps you hold on to that primal anger.

3. Cry Babies(Oh no!)-Ludacris. Yep, it's my man Luda coming back to give us a random, mindless song. In this song, Ludacris raps about a club getting shot up, and what he and his random rapper friends do during the whole ordeal. A great song to get some adrenaline flowing through your veins. Now it's time to come with a song to get me mad about nothing in particular!

4. Zerstoren-Rammstein. This is a great German heavy industrial metal band. Not only do they sound aggressive, but their speed and the deep voice of their lead singer help push them into many great places. The title is "To Destroy" and the lead singer sings about how he must destroy things, using many different destructive verbs through out the song. This one is good, if you know some German that is.

5. Gematria(The Killing Name)-Slipknot. A quick, hard hitting metal song in which they bring up the thought of burning down cities, and the idea that America is a killing name. I'll let the thoughts freely roam my mind as they have a few guitar solos, and scream "What if God doesn't care?" And just when you think they've stopped, they hit you again.

Mix and Match

I love all kinds of music so just about everything and anything has gone on to my Ipod. But for those who have known me longest, you know that I am a Disney/ Soundtrack geek. About 70% of the songs on my Ipod are scores written for movies or musicals (laugh at me I don't care). The other 30% includes hip-hop, pop, R&B, a lot of country, and some rock. Quite the variety I must say. Here's just a taste.

No Good Deeds- Stephen Schwart
Absolutely love this song. Don't really know why but i do. If I took a guess, I'd say it's because it's a song i can sing along with and be as stupidly animated as i want to be when no one is looking or listening. It's just awesome.

A Whole New World- Alan Menken
When I was younger, my dad and I would sing this duet every time I watched "Aladdin," and trust me I did quite a few times. Sometimes I'd even rewind it just so I could sing it again with him. So this one has sentimental value to it.

Who Says You Can't Go Home- Bon Jovi Feat. Jennifer Nettles
The perfect song for road trips with my mom. Another duet, she and I will sing it at the top of our lungs regardless if we're alone or there's someone else in the car. It always promises a good time.

Never Gonna Be Alone- Nickelback
Whenever I need a reminder that my family loves me, no matter how aggravated I get with them, I seem to turn to this song. It'll make me cry sometimes, but the lyrics are also comforting.

Imma Be- Black Eyed Peas
My pick-me-up, get-all-the-frustration-out song. Don't care much for the language or content, but I love to turn it up in the middle of a parking lot in the annoying-teenager fashion and sit there with the bass blasting in my ears.

Matthew R. Powell's Playlist for Just Chilling

these are songs for when you've been having a busy week/weekend and feel like just vibin out for a while.
1) Two Weeks- Grizzly Bear
This song is catchy but also extremely mellow. all the background oohs and ahhs are real nice and add some flavor, but it never reaches a point so climactic that you will find yourself saying "woah i dont feel so chill anymore." also some lyrics are "make it easy/ take your time" so the song also obviously has a very chill message.

2) The Prayer- Kid Cudi
when it comes to chill rap, cudi is usually a sure bet. this song is pretty deep and goes beyond "some applebottom jeans with the boots with the fur". its kinda depressing, but also just a good song, so dont let it get to you. it also includes a great sample from a good band (the funeral by band of horses).

3) House of Cards- Radiohead
what honest chill playlist doesnt include some radiohead? there are a lot of radiohead songs that could land on this playlist, but this is the most fitting one. the guitar hook that plays for most of the song is pretty awesome, and from the initial ooooooooooooooOOOOOooooo a the beginning of the song, you can guess that this song will be laid back. plus thom yorke's voice is like the giant cloud that floats you off into space. this song would also go on my "floating in space" playlist. if you enjoy this feeling, also listen to "weird fishes" by radiohead, but that's more of a "floating in the ocean" song.

4) White Sky- Vampire Weekend
gotta love those preppy ivy leaguers. mostly known for their energetic, non-chill song "a-punk", they deliver a large dollop of mellowness on this song. the chorus is what really makes this one. it goes aaaawwwwwaaoooooOOOOOoooooo. this doesnt mean anything, but if you're in a chill mindset, you're not worried about what is being said but are more concerned with how cool the sounds are. very ethereal.

5) No Other Way- Jack Johnson
jack johnson=hawaii=aloha=summer=shaved ice=hammocks=beaches=smoothies=flip flops= shorts=shady trees=the pool=warm weather=blue skies=no school=not caring about most things. does it get any more chill than that??

6) Redemption Song- Bob Marley
i just did this whole list and realized that i didnt include any bob marley. shame on me

Playlist

One of the times I will really sit and listen to an entire playlist is in the car or on the plane on the way to a trip. During this time, there is a variety of music I want to listen to, and it is sometimes hard to not want to press the next button so these songs have to be really good!
"If I never see your face again" by marroon 5 and rihanna- both of the artists are amazing and the tune switches up a lot so it keeps my attention no matter what even if I just am about to fall asleep on the plane
"Meet Virginia"- even though this song is older by most standards it's a classic, and almost anybody can relate to it there are so many different personalitiese the Train talks about.
"Away from the Sun"- the lyrics really make you think, and sometimes might even inspire you to help others because this song talks about some one who is really in the dumps and desperately needs a hand
"We do it for fun part 1" you don't really want to listen to the words because they are honestly just stupid and like any other rap song but every one knows this song and its a great song the turn the volume all the way up
" All the way turnt up" pretty much the biggest pump up song ever and great to listen to when your with all you friends
"Snow, hey oh)" Red Hot Chilli peppers really know how to catch your attention, and I can listen to this song over and over again with out getting sick of it
Lastly is "Iris" this song has gotten me through some hard times and I'm thankful for it! I love listening to it and possibly could be my favorite song of all times even though its not exactly dance material, which is a high priority in my mind

Summer

These are songs that remind me of summer. I like to listen to these songs during the gross winter months to remind myself that summer is right around the corner. It's also a great playlist for lounging around on the beach.

1. Hey, Soul Sister -- Train
The airy, upbeat feel of this song just makes me relax and think about the warm summer sun. It always gets stuck in my head whenever I hear it.

2. When The Sun Goes Down -- Kenny Chesney
Every year I go to the beach I always listen to this song. Listening to this song makes me think of the beatiful sunsets on the beach and the sand between my toes; it's the perfect pick me up in the midst of a blah gray February day.

3. I'm Yours -- Jason Mraz
I really like this song. I love the catchy tune and the lyrics. It makes me think of an open field and a bright blue sky above and a warm breeze.

4. Are You Gonna Be My Girl -- JET
This song that always makes me wanna dance. To me, it embodies the feeling of summer.

5. Boondocks -- Little Big Town
When I hear this song it reminds me of times when I'd play outside all day in the summer with my neighbors; we'd play kick ball for hours, eat snow cones, and play tag until dark. It makes me think of those summer days when you didn't have to worry about your schedule or summer homework.

Most of these have a summer related memory attached and pretty much embody the feeling of summer.

Autumn Playlist

Autumn is the best time of they year. It's a time of transition, a time of beauty, and a time of peace. My playlist is for the season of Autumn.

Build Me Up Buttercup -The Foundations
-With the new beginnings of Fall (new school year, radical changing of the seasons) come a lot of expectation. This song reminds me of the soemtimes naive enthusiasm for life I feel in the fall. I hope it doesn't let me down.

Ain't No Mountain High Enough -The Temptations
-The new beginning also fosters the feelings of this song. You know that, "I'm on top of the world, nothing can get me down, This is going to be my best year yet," feeling we feel in September before reality sets in? Ain't no mountain high enough!

Sweet Caroline -Neil Diamond
This song has the essence of fall. Its simple brilliance. It's
not superfluous or flashy, it is elegant.

Chicken Fried -Zac Brown Band
Fall is the most beautiful time in Kentucky. The colored leaves paint the landscape with their story, and I can't get enough of it. When I hear this song I think about Kentucky in the fall. Our state is a gorgeous one. A little rough around the edges, sure. But she's ours.

Don't Stop Believing -Journey
For me, Fall is Y-conference seasoon. And nothing elicits a more stark memory of the fall Y-conferences than the joy which ensues in breakout sing-a-long of "Just a small town girl!..."

Also: Anything by Billy Joel!

Blowing Off Steam

Everyone gets angry. It's a natural emotion for people, and you feel it all the time. The only real difference between people (when it comes to being angry) is the way we decide to approach and get over it. In my case, music is the medicine.

There are always a few particular songs I prefer to use to calm myself down. They are in a particular order and they correspond to the emotions I feel when I'm mad. Sorry if the majority of them are in an Asian language--those Asians just know where it's at.

1. "smash!!" by Girugamesh:
When I'm first feeling that rush of heat running up to my ears, and my eyebrows are all knit with frustration, all I want to do is listen to some good, loud screamo music. This is the perfect song for me, because the guitarists are rippin', and the vocalist is going all out. It's an easy, safe alternative for beating your fists into the wall, or any other physical damage you might want to inflict.

2. "Uno" by Muse:
After getting all the emotional violence out of my system, I'm still feeling pretty angry, but on a lower level. This song still has the intense guitars, but the vocalist isn't screaming into your ears. It gets you to calm down a little, while still entertaining the fire burning in your system.

3. "Calm Down" by THEATRE BROOKE
Okay, so almost all the rage has left my system. With this song, I'm spiraling down toward a calming point. It's smooth, slow, and quiet, and it really soothes the spirit. I can easily lay down and doze off with this, emptying my head and forgetting the reason for my anger.

4. "How Do You Do Mr. President" by THEATRE BROOKE
I've gotten angry, I've let out the rage, I've calmed myself down, and now I'm looking for a way to get my mood up. This song isn't horribly happy or peppy, but it's up-beat, and the lyrics make me smile. It builds me up and gets me ready to be laughing and acting normal again.

5. "Oh!" by SNSD
After all this angry business, I just want to have fun. This song is fast-paced, up-beat, and bubbly. It has me getting up on my feet, singing to the melody even if I have no idea what the vocalists are saying. By now I've forgotten why I was angry, or I've long gotten over it, and I'm just hopping around or bobbing my head to the catchy tune.

On the Road Again...

The open road begs for music. Whether you're on a cross-country trip or just headed to the store, nothing turns a boring drive into a memorable one like a good song to sing along to. So here's a few tracks I like to belt out while I'm on the road:

1)Drive - Incubus
It's not just the name of this song that makes it road-worthy. It fits the mood of a long trip, and it's hard NOT to sing along. Try to get a few friends in on the action, maybe get some harmony going, and you've got a simple way to kill miles of highway.

2)Scar Tissue - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Another tune that's perfect to sing along to on a long drive. The vocals stay in about the same range for most of the song, so it's easy to sound good following along (not that you should care).

3)Heard the World - OAR
Learn the lyrics to this song and you won't ever want to stop singing it. I remember one night when my friend Joe and I drove across town to get a video game we had our hearts set on. We put this song through the stereo and sang our hearts out. The game was awful, but this song made the drive more than worth it.

4)So Much to Say - Dave Matthews Band
Another song that Joe and I loved belting out while we cruised the town. Dave Matthews has an incredible voice, so you're never going to be able to match this very well. Just enjoy your attempt and the upbeat, catchy tune.

5)Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
How could I not put something on here from the 80's? This song is arguably the most sung-along to of anything from the era, and for good reason. It's irresistible; A wonderful story and a beautiful song. And it goes without saying that I recommend just about any other song from this era. You can never go wrong with the classics.

"Boat Music"

In my cd case I have about 15 CDs with "Boat Music" scribbled on them. A lot of you know what I mean when I say that I'm going to "the boat"- because you've experienced long, sunny days on Laurel, Cumberland, Kentucky, Cave Run, or Harrington..

Anyway, I wanted to share some "boat songs" for my mine play list.

Mr. Blue Sky - Electric Light Orchestra

If you've never listened to ELO, seriously, give them a try.. This is probably their only recognizable song (at least to our generation), but I HIGHLY recommend their album "Out Of The Blue". Anyway, this song is peppy and upbeat and happy, and about Mr. Blue Sky.. could it get much better?

Walkin' On the Sun - Smash Mouth

In the 90's Smash Mouth was pretty much the coolest band around.. (Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me, I aint the sharpest tool in the shed.. come on, I know your about to make an L and put it on your forehead) and this is my favorite song they did. The lyrics are really funny and catchy.. It's upbeat and fun to sing along to.. And it's just an all around good song.

When the Sun Goes Down - Kenny Chesney

Kenny Chesney, along with some other current country artists (Alan Jackson, Zac Brown Band) have been moving into the "Jimmy Buffet" genre.. It's about drinking and hanging out and having fun.. which is pretty much what hanging out at the lake is like.

Son of a Son of a Sailor - Jimmy Buffet

Jimmy Buffet is essential to all boat outings, period. I picked this one because it's my favorite, but Margaritaville, Desdemona, and Cheeseburger in Paradise, although cliche, are pretty much irresistible as well. Jimmy Buffet's specialty is creating that chill, "hey I'm on vacation, let's have a drink" mood.

Banana Pancakes - Jack Johnson

Okay, I have a special bias, but Jack is totally awesome for the boat.. "In Between Dreams" is totally chill and awesome background music. It's acoustic-y, mellow, and perfect for just hanging out. I really don't think there could be a better album to listen to at the lake.

So yeah, there you go. A perfect mini-playlist for hanging out at the lake.

Five Songs About Beth

So these are five songs about Beth. Pretty self explanatory. This might be kind of lame, but I think that's okay.
1. From Me to You- The Beatles
I know Beth put this on her list and talked about how this was her and I's song, but it's just such a happy memory- we both danced around our kitchen, waving around spatulas and wisks and kitchen utensils, and played this song.
2. Albatross- Judy Collins
This is one of the most beautiful songs of all time ever. It reminds me of someone dancing or wandering around in a field barefoot.
3. Wake Up- Arcade Fire
I mentioned this song once, and Beth told me she loved it but it made her sad and she always skipped over it. I realized I did the exact same thing.
4. Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover- Paul Simon
Once when we were ten-ish we were stuck in a car in a parking lot with my brother, and we played this song over and over and over again until we'd learned all the words. Neither of them remember this, but it definitely happened.
5. While You Were Sleeping- Elvis Perkins
This is a thinking song, and there's a line in it that I always repeat to her when I hear it.

I think every single song probably reminds me of Beth somehow. But these are just five.

Road Trip

Ah, the open road. No trip with your best friends is complete without a fantastic playlist to accompany those long miles.

1. "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. Regretably, most people recognize this song from the opening scene in Matilda. But it's open, rythmic, and it kind of reminds me of Australia for some reason.

2. "Straight Lines" by Silverchair. Sounds kind of like Coldplay, but with a slightly more rock edge. The kind of song you want to roll down the windows and sing out loud to.

3. "Chicago" by Sufjan Stevens. It's just so open and breezy. Sort of low key, a good scenery-watching song.

4. "Fearless" by Taylor Swift. Admit it: she's amazing. Sure, this song is a little cheesy, but the shiny wet roads, dancing in a storm imagery is so summer it's a must for the trip.

5. "Island in the Sun" by Weezer. Finally, finally at the beach! What better song to chill out to once you're finally there.

My Playlist

Sometimes when I go on run and get bored I like to pretend that I am filming a movie with my eyes. The loud, usually upbeat music, elevated heartrate, and boredom naturally lends itself to an imagined movie. These five songs are ones that work especially well in my imagined vignettes.

1. Blinded by Rainbows Remix with The Saturns
Already a great song, that is made even better with the strong beat. This song would be great for some emotional climax in my imagined movies. Maybe a boy running away triumphantly from his home to some newfound freedom. His footfalls concide with the beat.

2. Two Weeks/Dead Prez Remix
Two great songs made into one. This song could be used while a character in my imagined movie is running triumphantly through neighborhoods - over fences through peoples backyards. Dogs, mailmen, and police are chasing him, but he doesn't care.

3. Hostile Gospel Deliver Us Pt. 1 Talib Kwali
It samples a great song and then continues with "I call these rappers seals, because they club you to death, I could call them NAVY seals because they're government fed"

4. Anything by Girltalk
The sheer number of songs in each girltalk track amounts to a great schizoprenic, stimulating audio treat. This could be in the background in a movie that follows a kid running along the sidewalk as he jumps over peeing dogs, realesteate signs, etc.

5. E- Pro
Jst a great song for running. It may not have many (or no) words but it does motivate your legs to move. This would be great in a movie about a runner. Maybe he is running a race to save cancer. And he not only wns the race, but cures cancer while doing it.

I get pretty bored while running

Workout

I know its boring but i enjoy working out to some music. Not trying to waste your time with my dumb intro.....so, heres my list:

1. Drop the World by: Lil' Wayne
I chose this song because whenever I hear it I get hyped.. The slow intro slowly builds into a little rock and it can help me pump some iron. Adds a little half rock/ half rap to my playlist.

2. Bulls on Parade by: Rage Against the Machine
Rage has quite the style, and I dig it. Always can get the blood pumping while still keeping that Rage style and sounding good.

3. Thunderstruck by: AC/DC
The lyrics along with the great rhythm AC/DC always comes with makes this song a great fit for a run or for doing some squats.

4. All the Way Turnt Up by: Roscoe Dash ft. Soulja Boy
Not sure if this song is really particularly awesome for the workout room, but I just love it. Whenever I hear it I just wanna break out and dance...so I guess that's a physical activity.

5. The Way I Am by: Eminem
You can never go wrong with a little Em. And let me tell you, this jam from Eminem always gets my blood flowing with the lyrical anger and whatnot Em comes with.

Our House Is a Very Nice House-- The Songs of Being a Hansen

My family is a clan.
It's impossible for us not to be, I guess, with 4 kids within 18 months of age.
We are a ruthless clan.
I have been 'kicked out' of the family for a few minutes countless times because I was unable to name a song's title, or temporarily forgot who it was by, by Luke, my dad, and even my own mother (though when she quizzes me, i've realized the answer is either a Beatle or the Supremes.)
So, I have compiled a playlist of five songs that are intrinsically "Hansen Songs." I really hope this isn't too lame.

1) "Our House" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash
Or really, ANY song by CSN. But this is the song I have woken up to on many, many Sundays, with my mom making waffles; I have memories dancing around doing dishes, Luke trying to sing along. It's so HAPPY.

2) "Catch my Disease" Ben Lee
This song always cheers up our mornings; it's the best mixtape song. It makes me want to get out of bed. My mom thinks it's eally funny how it's called "Catch my disease"; I think it's really funny that she laughed at that and is an OB/GYN.

3)"From Me to You" The Beatles
One night in middle school anna and I turned on early beatles and grapped a whisk and a laddle and danced all around the kitchen singing. It was around eleven-o'clock- I don't know where anyone else in our house was. But this is our song.

4)"Suzanne" Judy Collins
One night, last year, I was doing dishes, listening to Judy, and my dad came up and wrapped his arms around me and we danced. He has a really beautiful voice. The memory gives me shivers.

5) "The Golden Road" The Grateful Dead
My dad worries that he's a kurmudgeony man. But my clearest memory of him is sitting beside me in a truck driving across Michigan, his beard grown out too long and wild, wearing a flannel shirt, jamming next to me to the Grateful Dead, telling stories. We stopped at a fruit stand and bought blueberries.

My Playlist

ANy time, any situation, any scenario, any mood, etc., etc. the answer is a playlist made up of Eminem. He posssses the ability to drop the bomb on em, with his kick butt lyrics that can really get you hyped up. However at the same time he retains a flow that can stimulate the mind. So, no matter if i am pissed, happy, just chillen, or whatever i can always bust out some Em and turn that swagga knob on.

Now my Eminem playlist consists of his top ten songs in my opinion, but in no particular order:
1. Kill You
A song that just makes you wanna go out and light someone up.
2.Til I collapse
A great pump up song
3. Lose yourself
Another phenomenal pump up song
4. Old Times Sake
Song that just has a great hook and i know all the lyrics to, no big
5. Elevator
One of the newer songs but it shows a different variety of rap that none other than em can pull
6.Forever
Which has the best freestyle in Eminems illustrious history
7.Rain Man
A song where it's not so much about the hook but the messedupedness of the lyrics
8. Mockingbird
A common song sung to babies turned into a hard rap song
9.The Way I Am
Basically a song that says that he is who he is and he is not changing
10. Forgot About Dre
The great song about the infamous DR.DRE and his return to hip hop

My best shot

This may be a corny idea, but as there are exactly 5 members of my family, I'm going to go with it. So, with no better idea at hand, here are the top 5 songs that remind me of my family. In order of oldest to youngest, this is my list:

1. Early – Victoria Williams: for my Mom.
This is from a CD called Going Driftless: an Artist’s Tribute to Greg Brown. I have no idea who Greg Brown is, but I love this CD. Just my mom and I drove to Beaufort, SC one summer to visit my grandparents down there, and we listened to this album THE WHOLE WAY. This is her favorite song, of the CD and she replayed it about a thousand times. I can’t hear it without thinking of summertime, road trips, and my mom.
2. Cats in the Cradle – Harry Chapin: my Dad’s song
He calls this “the bad dad song.” Although it has nothing to do with him, he has always liked this song (he's kind of a softie). One time, it got stuck in my head so I had to listen to it to get it out of my head, and it was so sad I had to call my dad and tell him that he was a good father.
3. Shady Grove – Crooked Still – my oldest brother, Mac
Mac discovered Crooked Still last year, and this summer while he was home, he listened to this song every time he drove the car. Crooked Still reminds me of last summer, and spending time with Mac.
4. Girl – Beck: for Cal, my other brother
This has a really peppy beat, and sounds like a love song. But, listen closely, and you will hear that he is singing about killing the girl. Cal thought that was a pretty hilarious concept in like 9th grade.
5. Homeward Bound- Simon and Garfunkel: Me
Exactly the type of music I like – mellow and folk-y. I’m so sad that Simon and Garfunkel couldn’t make it work and make more tunes together. I’ve loved this song forever, and listen to it all the time. So, it reminds me of…me.

I hope you understand the feelings I put into this playlist

“The average day” playlist

1. Moonlight Sonata Mvt. 1 - Ludwig Von Beethoven

This is a relatively quiet and slow song. It is set in a minor key and thus the overall feel of the piece is one of either moodiness or despair. For me this is the song of the morning. When I wake up every morning, I feel terrible and I really don’t want to get out of bed. And until I get to school, I am in a comatose state.

2. 21 Guns - Greenday

On the car ride to school, this song is always on the radio. I mostly listen to 106.3 and at 7:50, almost every other morning, this song comes on. It’s a song about guns but it isn’t all that violent. This is the way I feel about school in the mornings. I feel like pulling out a gun but not using it. This song will usually be stuck in my head from 1st through 3rd hour.

3. Apologize - One Republic

Usually by midday, I have done something that needs apologizing. Usually it is something minor like getting on someone’s nerves or bumping into someone in the hallway or telling a brutally bad joke. Anyhow, I always find myself apologizing about something by midday. But most of the time my apology isn’t accepted. *sigh* Too bad.

4. Flight of the Bumblebee - Rimsky-Korsakov

Hurry, hurry, hurry! As the day starts to come to an end, I find myself often checking the time and willing for the rest of day to rush by at warp speed. This song reflects the “hurry” feeling that I feel at this time of the day.

5. I’ll Make a Man out of You - Lyrics: David Zippel Music: Matthew Wilder

Let's get down to business - to defeat the Huns
Tranquil as a forest
But on fire within
Once you find your center
You are sure to win
Time is racing toward us till the Huns arrive
Heed my every order and you might survive
By the end of day, as I sit down to do my homework, this is what I’m telling my brain. Let’s do this! Let’s get studying and finish all of this homework (aka the Huns)!

I got carried away...

I'm an active listener. I guess that could be because of my involvement in Band - I can't listen to something nowadays without thinking about it, about its progressions, about the relationships between the chords - and most of all, the emotional effect it creates.

My playlist - that is, my ideal playlist for the purpose of this assignment - is one that gets me thinking about the future, one that makes my mind rush at the speed of sound itself, full of sweet musings about nothing and everything. I listen to these songs when I'm feeling stressed or pensive*, I listen these songs when I want to forget about whatever's going on at the time, whenever I want to take a mental vacation from the bustle of everyday life.

*Music influences my mood more than almost anything else. I have entire artists dedicated to when I'm in a certain mood. It's weird.

"THOUGHT-PROVOKING" PLAYLIST.
1. "Beginnings" - Chicago
Besides the chorus of "Only the beginninggggg / Of what I want to feel forever," this song has some mellow chord progressions coupled with some of the sickest rhythms to be found in classic rock of the Chicago era. And those lyrics! I mean, damn. And it was difficult settling on one Chicago song. Check out their CD "Greatest Hits Vol. 1" for more superb listens.

2. "New World Man" - Rush
This ideal man, presented as the enigmatic and nameless "new world man" (possibly a new world everyman?), is bolstered by a smooth melody and flawless instrumentation, all combining to present a musical experience unrivalled by most modern songs.

3. "Black or White" - Michael Jackson
In what I consider one of the Prince of Pop's finest works, MJ combines an old favorite - bitching about racial equality - with his signature style and some of the finest rhymes I've heard in a godawful long time. This song has a bona fide heartbeat. The only drawback is Bill Bottrell's rap break in the middle...and even that can be overlooked with such a solid track as this one.

4. "Son of Man" - Phil Collins
I'll admit it, as one who grew up listening to the Tarzan soundtrack endlessly on a CASSETTE TAPE PLAYER (vintage!), I have a soft spot for songs from this motion picture, and on top of that, let's face it, Phil Collins is just one fresh sonuvagun. I particularly like this song for its fast beat and that freaking amazing melody. This song should be certified platinum, twice.

5. "Back in the High Life" - Steve Winwood
This is a pretty light song compared to the rest, but it has much the same general message. It's not quite as good as some of the others on this list, and probably not as good as others in my library, but I saw it and remembered how much I liked it. It's got what I can only describe as an inspiring style to it - if you haven't heard it, go ahead and listen to it.

1. "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" - Monty Python

Assignment: the perfect playlist

"High Fidelity" (2000) was a film that was remarkably ahead of its time. The film tells the story of Rob Gordon, a washed-up music junkie (played by the fantastic John Cusack) who spends his days creating perfect 5 song playlists. There's his playlist for his worst break up ever, his playlist of the top 5 soul tracks released between 1955 and 1965, and his playlist for his ex-girlfriend's dad's funeral.

Today, thanks to Limewire, iTunes, the "genius" Itunes feature, and Pandora, creating a "perfect" playlist has never been easier.

On the other hand, Rob probably would be appalled by the slapdash way some of us throw together any group of songs above a certain tempo before we head to the gym, or take all those below a certain tempo and thoughtlessly label it “chillaxxx.” As Rob forewarned, “The making of a good compilation tape is a very subtle art. Many do’s and don’ts. You’re using someone else’s poetry to express how you feel. This is a delicate thing.”

So for this blog assignment, create a "perfect" playlist for something. It could be your perfect playlist to listen to at the gym (boring!), perfect playlist for a rainy day, perfect playlist for anything. . . be as creative as you can. Once you have chosen a topic, select 5 tracks for this playlist, noting the song and artist, and write a few sentences explaining why you chose this song, what this song adds to your playlist, why you put it where you did, and how it works with the other songs you selected to create a cohesive perfect playlist.
