In Obama's speech, I found it interesting that he employed the stratagem of absolutely thoroughly considering his audience: I found that he really adapted the language to better suit his targeted audience - that is, us, the youth of America and the people intended to be persuaded by his speech. By using language befitting of the age group he was aiming towards, like "iPhone" and "Xbox," Obama managed to put himself on the same level as his audience. Had he used a more lofty style of speech, he would have lost the attention of a good portion of his audience; likewise, a very basic level of speech would have lost him great credibility to another significant portion of his audience.
Also, through using anecdotes of personal success accomplished by several individual students across the country, Obama implies that if students whose lives present as many challenges as the anecdotal students had overcome can accomplish what they did, nobody really has any excuse for being lazy and not aspiring to anything.
