The words used in Obamas nationwide school address last week were well used to make his audience pay attention. It's hard for a student to ignore the T.V. at the front of the classroom when they hear buzz words like "Xbox" and "iPhone" come out of it.
Obama knows that students detest a long, repetitive lecture. He knows that they've probably heard nearly everything he said last week a thousand times. However, instead of just taking the easy way out and giving a generic, boring spiel about how you need to pay attention in class and do your homework and brush your teeth and - you get the point. Obama integrated some interesting anecdotes and "in" topics into his speech to draw in that young, largely inattentive audience.
And it worked. I watched it. I listened to that dressed-up version of your everyday speech about what takes you places in life, and I actually enjoyed it. At least this version showed up bearing an Xbox and an iPhone.
