Right out I'll say that I wasn't looking forward to this speech. Being forced to watch another cliche on "doing well in school" isn't exactly what I look for during the day. Now I will say that, unlike many, I actually watched it. I wanted to see what he had to say, and if it was valid.
Now I think really the biggest thing that helped him was his use of terms or references we would know. Using the "Xbox" instead of "Video Games" is just one example of this. Also, the use of famous people like Michael Jordan as examples to what hard work brings helped his argument along. Showing us things, and talking about things that we know about allows us to better sympathize with your point.
His biggest downfall I would have to say was in the way his speech went. It was too formal for kids, elementary, middle, and high school age. Sure, high schoolers are young adults, but do we want another authority figure telling us to work hard? Not really. Many of us get that at home, on sports teams, or in class. We get the point. Get on our level, stop being so formal. Yes you're the president, but give us something we can relate to, give us an attitude and a personality we can relate to.
